    These are some terms you may hear in relation to your child's education.

    A way of collecting information about a student’s special learning needs, strengths, and interests.
    AYP
    Adequate Yearly Progress – No Child Left Behind legislation requires each school to show improvement each year in various subgroups based on FCAT.

    Behavioral Intervention Plan
    CARD
    Center for Autism and Related Disabilities

    Compass Learning
    A commercial computer program that assesses a student’s level and then provides instruction at that level.
    CRISS
    Creating Independence through Student-owned Strategies - a teaching approach whereby students use metacognitive and organizing strategies to learn how to learn.

    DAR
    Diagnostic Assessment of Reading - reading assessment used at the intermediate level of elementary schools to determine a child's reading strengths and weaknesses.

    Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills - reading assessment used at the primary level in elementary schools to determine a child's reading strengths and weaknesses.

    Developmental Reading Assessment - a kindergarten through 3rd grade reading assessment used to determine a child's reading strengths and weaknesses.

    Exceptional Student Education- Students with physical or mental disabilities, and gifted students.

    FBA
    Functional Behavioral Assessment. This is done when a student is not responding to teacher interventions in the classroom to help remediate behavioral problems. It is data gathered by trained personnel to determine environmental factors that are triggering and maintaining problem behaviors. This data is used when developing a Behavior Intervention Plan.

    IDEA
    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (formerly Education of Handicapped Act (EHA) 94-142.
    IEP
    Individual Education Plan- a required school plan for all children receiving special education or ESE services.
    IEP Meeting
    A meeting held at least once each school year to make decisions about changes in the IEP and review the student’s placement.
    Inclusion
    Program where children with special needs are placed in regular classroom and receive assistance from a regular ed. and ESE teacher.
    LEAP

    Least Restrictive Environment – part of the federal law and the state law that deals with determining the placement of children with disabilities.

    Progress Monitoring Plan  (formerly AIP- Academic Improvement Plan) – students working below grade level are given interventions.
    PT
    Physical Therapy – geared towards gross motor skills that impact a student's academic success and / or daily living skills.

    RFB&D
    Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic
    RtI
    Response to Intervention or way(s) in which classroom strategies either help or do not help a child with an academic skill deficiency. Progress monitoring by teacher-chosen classroom assessments determine the effectiveness of an intervention.

    Teacher Support Team- helps the teacher look at a student's assessment data to see if interventions have been effective.
