Prevention and Intervention

  • Substance use prevention and intervention programs can involve the youth’s family, school, and community. Prevention programs have been proven to be effective, however; families and influential adults continue to play the most important role in determining how youth will handle the lure of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, alcohol, and the misuse of illegal and prescription drugs.

Early intervention prior to high school is critical. Youth who use alcohol or tobacco early in life are more likely to abuse them and become addicted.
